Thickened or discoloured nails

Gryphotic nail

Fungal Nail

Nails may become thickened for a number of reasons:

  • trauma
  • fungal infection
  • underlying medical reasons such as Psoriasis.

Treatment involves cutting and reducing the thickness of the nail.

Many thickened nails are misdiagnosed as Fungal nails and over the counter treatments are used with no effect.   Fungal Nail Infections are very difficult to treat and prescription only medications such as terbinafine (Lamasil) taken orally are generally required. However, this medication has side effects and may not be suitable for many.

We also offer the Clearanail drill system for the treatment of fungal nails.

If in doubt consult the practice and we will be able to advise you on the best course of treatment .

In some cases nail surgery may be beneficial for thickened nails.
